The following techniques are just some of the ways organic farmers promote a healthy planet:
- Crop rotation alternates the kinds of crops grown in each field year after year. This helps to build healthier soil and eliminates pest breeding grounds created by growing the same crop annually. It replenishes and maintains the soil fertility, uses less fossil fuel, conserves water in the soil, causes less erosion, and conserves more biological resources than conventional farming.
- Adding composted manure, according to strict guidelines, helps soil retain moisture and nutrients. This composted manure helps replenish farm soil much like falling leaves fertilize forest soil.
